2022 Hyundai Tucson Vs. Hyundai Santa Fe
The new Hyundai Tucson 2022 looks sharp. It has an edgy front fascia, angled body panel, and knife-like taillights, all designed to give this small crossover an aggressive look.
And while Tucson looks different, the details underneath its new body make Hyundai a great package overall.
But buyers in the market for small crossovers – specifically from Hyundai – have more than a few options to choose from.
Excluding competitors, which number more than a dozen, Hyundai has six crossovers on sale today: Venue, Kona (and electric), Tucson, Santa Fe, Palisade, and Nexo. However, this compact Santa Fe makes sibling rivalry interesting with the new Tucson in terms of size.
Although Hyundai has released an image of the Santa Fe 2021 facelift and some details are lacking, full details won’t arrive until the end of the year, closer to the SUV’s sales date.
So we stuck comparing the new Tucson 2022 with the Santa Fe 2020 in terms of size, powertrain, and options, and on paper, both crossovers are quite suitable.
Tucson Vs. Santa FE Size
Technically, both the Santa Fe and Tucson are compact brand choices – but one on the compact size is a little bigger.
The Santa Fe has a wheelbase of 108.9 inches versus the new 105.5-inch Tucson wheelbase, and the Santa Fe has an overall length of 187.8 inches, while the Tucson is only 177.2 inches.
The Santa Fe is still larger in width, measuring 74.4 inches versus Tucson’s 73.4 inches. One brother was shopping in the hoarse area of the store, and one wasn’t.
Santa Fe’s larger size means more cargo and passenger space inside. For example, Santa Fe 2020 has 35.9 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row and a total of 71.3 cubic feet, with the second row folded flat.
Tucson, meanwhile, has more room behind the second row – 38.7 cubic feet – but fewer totals – 63.5 cubic feet – with the second row folded flat.
The two figures above can determine which of these two SUVs is right for you: do you want more cargo space with accessible seats or more cargo space? If your answer is the first, choose Tucson, and if it’s the latter, select Santa Fe.
Hyundai hasn’t given any passenger volume figures for the new Tucson, but it promises extra inches of legroom compared to last year’s model.
That means the rear legroom will increase to 39.2 inches, making it almost identical to the larger 40.9-inch Santa Fe.
Tucson Vs. Santa FE: Power and Performance
The 2022 Hyundai Tucson comes with several different engine options, including pure gas and hybrids. The Tucson base has a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine capable of producing 190 horsepower (142 kilowatts) and 182 pound-feet (247 newton-meters), paired with an eight-speed automatic.
Meanwhile, an optional 1.6-liter four-cylinder hybrid powertrain produces 230 hp (171 kW) and 258 lb-ft (350 nm) and is paired with a six-speed dual-clutch.
Tucson will also have the plug-in hybrid option of using the same 1.6-liter engine, but Hyundai has yet to release other important details about it, such as its all-electric lineup.
As for the Santa Fe 2020, buyers can choose either from a 2.4-liter four-cylinder base that produces 185 hp (137 kW) and 178 lb-ft (241 nm) or a more powerful turbocharged 2.0-liter engine that produces 235 hp. (175 kW) and 260 lb-ft (352 nm). Both crossovers also offer optional all-wheel drive.
When questioning which crossover powertrain is best, based on numbers, we’ll give Tucson’s new hybrid powertrain a nod. Its power figures almost match the choice of the most powerful engine in Santa Fe. Being a traditional hybrid powertrain in smaller, lighter vehicles is sure to result in superior fuel savings.
Tucson Vs. Santa FE: Technology
Visually, the inside of the new Tucson looks like a few years above Santa Fe. It comes standard with an 8.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but choosing the highest range model gives you a sleek, nearly flat 10.3-inch screen with CarPlay, Android Auto, and navigation, as well as split-screen and voice functions. There is also a fully digital instrument cluster right behind the wheel.
Santa Fe 2020, meanwhile, gets a slightly smaller 7.0-inch touchscreen to get started, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality.
A larger 8.0-inch screen is available and offers all the same features plus navigation, but not as impressive as the new Tucson home screen. But, hands down, Tucson wins on the tech front.
Tucson Vs. Santa FE: Price
Hyundai has yet to release a price for the 2022 Tucson, but given the 2021 model starts at $23,700 in the U.S., it’s predicted the new one will get a slight price increase.
The Hyundai Santa Fe 2020, meanwhile, costs $26,275 to launch in the U.S. Of course, it’s a bigger vehicle, so it’s no wonder the price is higher, but it’s also now older compared to the all-new Tucson, which makes it harder to swallow the cost.
It is said that there is an updated Santa Fe also coming for 2021. While we don’t yet have all the details, it should upgrade its predecessor and borrow some of the same powertrain options and technology from the smaller Tucson.
