2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 – The new Hyundai Ioniq 5 will be available with rear-wheel drive, although the all-wheel-drive version will go online a little later.

The 77.4-kilowatt-hour battery and single electric motor produce 225 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, and Hyundai targets a range of 300 miles in this configuration.

However, the figure the company cited for the global Ioniq 5 using a much more optimistic European WLTP test cycle.

The 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 is a new all-electric compact crossover with advanced technology, futuristic style, and versatile interiors.

Intended as a Hyundai subbrand, the Ioniq moniker also applies to many upcoming EV models, but the 2023 Ioniq 5 has debuted first.

It features an 800-volt architecture that allows for an impressive charging speed, and we estimate it will have a driving range of between 258 and 290 miles.

The 168-kW rear motor joins the 74-kW front unit for the all-wheel-drive version, and the total output is rated at 320 hp and 446 lb-ft of torque.

However, Hyundai estimates a range of 269 miles and says the fully loaded Ioniq 5 Limited AWD will travel 244 miles. The final EPA ranking will be published later this year.

Compared to other new EVs, the Ioniq 5’s forecast range looks good. The Volkswagen ID 4 rear-wheel drive is rated 250 miles, and the Ford Mustang Mach-E is most efficient with RWD and long-range batteries reaching 305 miles.

However, Hyundai’s crossover has its advantages over Ford and VW with its fast charging technology. The 800-volt electrical system means the Ioniq 5 can receive electrons from a superfast 350 kW charger, and the battery can charge from 10% to 80% in just 18 minutes. In other words, you can add 68 miles to the Ioniq 5 in just 5 minutes.

This fast charger may be difficult to find, so the Ioniq 5 can also work on the more common 400-volt old infrastructure.

Plugged into a 150 kW charger, you’ll need to wait 25 minutes to switch from 10% to 80% or travel 42 miles in 5 minutes. Still, it’s not bad.

If you’re charging from home, the Ioniq 5 can receive a Level 2 charger that ejects 10.9 kW and reaches full battery in less than 7 hours.

Remember, charging isn’t linear, so the last 20% takes longer than the first 80% or so, but most customers are more likely to stay connected overnight.

The Ioniq 5 has an electric powertrain available in two potentials. The rear-drive configuration delivers 225 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, which Hyundai says will drive five from zero to 60 mph in 7.4 seconds.

The all-wheel-drive version is much more powerful, with 320 horses, weighs 446 pound-feet, and is faster. It is said to catapult up to 60 mph in a 5.2 tick.

Five rides on Hyundai and Kia’s new Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), which, once again, will support many of the new EV models coming in.

Range, Charging, and Battery Life

With an operating voltage of 800 volts, the Ioniq 5 has the same advanced electrical architecture as the Audi e-Tron GT and Porsche Taycan.

However, as it stands, the battery has a smaller usable battery capacity. The Ioniq package supplies 77.4 kWh and can be charged from 10 to 80 percent in about 18 minutes or add 68 miles in about five minutes when plugged into a DC fast charger.

Hyundai is targeting a range of 300 miles for rear-drive models and 269 miles with all-wheel drive. We estimate the final version will offer a range between 258 and 290 miles.

While not as artful as the cabin tempted by the Hyundai 45 Concept, the interior of the Ioniq 5 offers a tech-savvy space with a digital dashboard and high-dose eco-friendly materials.

A head-up display with augmented reality that can project navigational directions on the windshield is just one of the fantastic features.

The compact crossover also utilizes its electric packaging, with a completely flat floor for maximum passenger and cargo space.

The front seat can also be reclined and equipped with a footrest, which will make people relax while the Ioniq is charging.

With a longer wheelbase than the three-row Hyundai Palisade, the 5 has ample front and rear passenger space.

The large center console has plenty of storage space, and on top-spec Limited trims, it can slide back and forth between the front seats.

Hyundai says the Ioniq subbrand emphasizes connected life, and the Ioniq 5 has several innovative infotainment and connectivity features.

The 12.0-inch touchscreen shares a panel on the dashboard with a 12.0-inch digital gauge cluster, but the former serves as a hub for all things entertainment.

These include apps that integrate with smartphones like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and advanced voice recognition technology.

Safety Features

Along with a suite of driver assistance technologies, the Ioniq 5 will offer a Level 2 autonomous driving mode called Highway Driver Assist 2, similar to GM Super Cruise because it can drive on highways and change lanes with little or no driver.

Hyundai says its EV has four levels of brake regeneration and is capable of driving with one pedal. Beyond that, the Ioniq 5 features a new smart-pedal system that adjusts regen levels by taking radar into account – think of it like full-speed adaptive cruising control, but using regenerative power rather than actual brakes.

There are four driving modes: Eco, Comfort, Sport, and Snow. Each will vary the regen parameters as well as torque sharing on the all-wheel-drive model.

There is a lot of advanced driver assistance, including avoiding a forward collision that works when turning left in front of oncoming traffic.

The available Highway Driving Assist II now has a lane-change assist and can adjust the position of the car’s lane if the vehicle in the adjacent lane tries to be comfortable.

Adaptive cruising control is also enhanced with intelligent learning – driving as usual, and technology will adapt the system to your preferences for acceleration and vehicle distance.

Finally, the new advanced head-up display uses augmented reality to layer navigation directions and lane safety information. There is also a front vehicle indicator for Ioniqs equipped with HDA II.

The Ioniq 5 2023 will be available in SE, SEL, and Limited trims, and prices will be announced closer to EV sales dates this fall. Estimate the price at about $45,000 before the incentive.
