2023 Hyundai Elantra GT: What We Know So Far

2023 Hyundai Elantra GT

2023 Hyundai Elantra GT – Hyundai will probably sell another compact car Elantra hatchback version in the U.S. The Elantra GT, based on the global i30, will be re-produced for the 2023 model year.

As with many small car cancellations, Hyundai cited the expanded SUV lineup — particularly the Venue and Kona subcompact models — as reasons for dropping this model.

The Elantra hatchback started as a cart version of Elantra called Elantra Touring in 2009. However, we recently reviewed the Elantra GT N-Line 2022 with a six-speed manual transmission and enjoyed its driving character.

The Hyundai Elantra GT 2023 is a neat and efficient package with a clean, elegant design, but the GT sying-along promises a little more sportiness than it can deliver.

It’s not a very fast car. In contrast, a basic car with a mandatory six-speed automatic transmission is more in the mold of the highly praised Volkswagen Golf — which, in our opinion, is one of the best hatchbacks you can buy.

The basic GT offers excellent fuel economy, class-leading cargo space, and high-end standard equipment for the money.

The interior is sensitively designed and incorporates one of the most intuitive infotainment systems on the market — all Elantra GTs become standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capabilities.

However, step into the Elantra GT N Line, and everything becomes a little more saucier. The N Line, named in line with the company’s new performance offerings, gets a more powerful turbocharged engine, summer tires, and a choice of a six-speed manual transmission or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic.

2023 Elantra GT Competition

The Hyundai Elantra GT competes with some of the best hatchbacks on the market, including the Volkswagen Golf, Honda Civic, and Mazda 3.

Unfortunately, Hyundai can’t quite match the responsiveness or solidity of those industry stalwarts. As a result, N Line is a more desirable proposition.

It’s faster and more powerful than the standard versions of the Golf, Civic, and 3, but cheaper than most of the higher performance versions of those competitors, including the GTI and Civic Si.

2023 Hyundai Elantra GT Features

If you want a panoramic sunroof, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assistance, premium audio systems, and ventilated seats, you must first ride a pony for an optional dual-clutch automatic transmission. And that security system is not available at all on basic GTs.

Here are some options in the affordable compact hatchback segment: Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Mazda 3, and Subaru Impreza. Unfortunately, the VW Golf base is likely to depart the U.S. market after the 2021 model year, as a new eighth-generation version is expected to be sold here only in the form of a high-performance GTI.

2023 Hyundai Elantra GT Redesign

Hyundai Elantra will continue for 2023 with a redesigned sedan version, which now offers a hybrid powertrain, and an upcoming performance-oriented N-Line version, which has yet to be fully revealed. And Hyundai still offers a three-door Veloster hatchback, which is available in the form of a high-octane N.

2023 Hyundai Elantra GT Engine

The Elantra GT is a front-wheel-drive hatchback, motivated by a 161-hp four-cylinder or 201-hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine.

Hyundai engines are paired exclusively with a six-speed automatic transmission, while the zestier version receives a standard six-speed manual or a seven-speed automatic.

Regular GT won’t offend a relaxed driver, but its non-turbocharged engine is less attractive than most competitors.

As a result, the version we tested had the slowest acceleration time among similar rivals. However, we like the lively throttle response at low turns, and the automatic transmission operates smoothly and inconspicuously.

However, the response stands out at higher engine speeds, where coarse engine noise interferes with the cabin. While we haven’t driven the recently renamed Elantra GT N Line, we’ve tested the previously named GT Sport.

It went from zero to 60 mph in a competitive 6.6-second class with a manual transmission, but a similarly equipped Volkswagen Golf GTI did so in 5.9 seconds.

However, Hyundai shifters are easy to manipulate, and clutch pedals work smoothly and linearly. As a result, every GT we drive shows an incredible ride as we drive it across the various road surfaces that canvas southeast Michigan.

It never feels uneasy on the bumpy part, passengers are well insulated from the harsh impact, and the lack of wobbles and stricaling bodes well for building quality.

2023 Hyundai Elantra GT Specs

The GT has competent handling under absolute limits and a balanced chassis that avoids feeling lifeless. The steering light is accurate but has no feedback from rivals such as the Mazda 3 and Volkswagen Golf.

Hyundai’s brake pedals are strangely inconsistent in responding to our input, with a stronger feel in city traffic stopping and going and fewer bites on the highway.

Despite EPA’s incredible estimates, regular Elantra GT shows impressive real-world fuel economy in our testing. The government estimates it has 25 mpg of the city and 32 highways.

The turbocharged Elantra GT N Line has the same rating as the optional automatic transmission, but the standard manual gearbox lowers both ratings by 2 mpg.

The regular GT exceeds its government estimate of 5 mpg on our 200-mile highway test route. Thus, a margin of some cars can be achieved.

Likewise, it observes a 37 mpg tied with top competitors such as the Chevrolet Cruze and Honda Civic. Hyundai’s turbocharged engine exceeded its EPA estimate of 1 mpg in our highway fuel-economy test, but its 31 mpg was 5 mpg less than the Honda Civic Si and Volkswagen Golf GTI.

2023 Hyundai Elantra GT Interior

Inside, the Elantra GT has a sophisticated style highlighted by the suitability of tight panels and good quality materials. The standard version has a fabric surface available in black or beige.

The interior soft-touch plastic and silver trim pieces offset the bottom of the cabin, which is sheathed in an unavoidable type of hard plastic at this price point.

Although high-quality cabins are standard, luxury items cost much more as they are combined into expensive packages.

Unfortunately, the rear seats are tighter than competitors, and some famous features do not exist. Instead, the Elantra GT does what’s best for hatchbacks—carrying more stuff than similar-sized sedans.

It holds five carry-on suitcases behind the back seat in our tests and has the largest cargo-area volume among similar competitors.

Hyundai also has competitive interior cubby storage, including handy front door pockets and a large center console trash can.

Each GT has a responsive 8.0-inch touchscreen that includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. While the shiny-black bezel system interferes with clean interior design, it has user-friendly controls.

2023 Hyundai Elantra GT Safety

Highway Safety (ranked second best), but only gets a four-star rating (out of five possibilities) from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Unfortunately, regular GT is only available with blind-spot monitoring and rear traffic alerts. The sportier Elantra GT N Line is available with more advanced driver assistance technology, requiring expensive packages and optional automatic transmissions. They are:

  • Available lane-departure alerts and help guarding the line
  • Automatic high-beam headlights are available
  • Adaptive cruise control is available

Meanwhile, We are still waiting for the debut of Elantra N Line 2021, but Hyundai has released some sporty compact sedan teasers.

Hyundai has not announced specifications for the Elantra N Line. Still, it has been reported that it will be powered by the same 1.6-liter turbocharged Elantra GT Line that comes out, meaning it should have about 201 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque.

The New Hyundai Elantra GT Price Starting From $21,625 (Est).
